Preparing for construction takes planning. You need to get permits together, make sure you have the right insurance, and get the right equipment when you need it. If this is your first time working in Bakersfield, California, learn the basics before you start building.
Building Permits Needed
You’ll need to get building permits for the following:
- New buildings
- New additions, including rooms, patio covers, and swimming pools
- Changes to current buildings, such as putting on a new roof
- Replacing or fixing a water heater, plumbing, air conditioner units, or wiring
- Moving or tearing down a building
- Putting in heating equipment such as fireplaces, wall heaters, and stoves
Bakersfield doesn’t ask you to get building permits for the following:

- Fences 6 feet high or shorter
- Retaining walls not more than 4 feet high
- Painting and finishing work

To get a permit, get the application online. Fill it out and bring it to the Public Services Building. For detailed plans, you’ll need to send in three copies of the plans for the building department to review. You can use the city’s online system to check on your permits.
To schedule building inspections, go to the online permit system for the City of Bakersfield. Here you can schedule or cancel inspections. Click on “Schedule/Cancel Insp.” and search for the permit by application number. You can also visit the Building Division on Chester Avenue in Bakersfield. Hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but not on federal holidays.
California requires general contractors to hold a current, valid license from the Contractors State License Board. California only licenses general contractors to oversee a project that touches one or more of the following specialty work areas:
