The online portal, eTRAKiT, allows you to apply for permits, search for existing permits, and pay fees. You need a building permit to do the following at both commercial and residential locations:
This includes sheds, signs, and fences. If you’re unsure whether you need a building permit, it’s best to talk to a permit technician and find out. If you prefer to submit a hard copy of your permit application rather than using the online portal, you can find the form on the Plan Review & Forms page, which you can find by navigating to the Development Services page and then the Building Inspections subpage.
You can schedule a building inspection through the permits online portal. If you prefer, you can also call Development Services to schedule an inspection. There are separate phone numbers to call for fire-related, irrigation, and landscape inspections.
Texas doesn’t require general contractors to be licensed to work within the state. It does require that specialized contractors have a license. The City of Frisco, however, requires all contractors to register by filling out a contractor registration application. This includes general contractors as well as specialized contractors, such as electricians and plumbers. You must renew your registration annually if you continue to work in Frisco. The city will not issue permits to a contractor with an expired license.
You can find the contractor application on the city’s website. Once you’ve filled it out, you can drop it off or email it to Building Inspections. The city reviews applications as quickly as possible. To check on the status of your application, call a permit technician or email Building Inspections.
To register with the city as a contractor, you must show proof of liability insurance. It’s a good idea to have workers’ compensation on your insurance policy in addition to contractor liability insurance, but Texas does not require you to have it. Workers’ compensation covers expenses related to injuries that occur while at work. It’s protection to both employers and employees.
In addition to getting permits, licenses, and insurance ready to go before starting a job, you might want to also look into equipment rental that you may need for the job. You can order scissor lifts and boom lifts and have them delivered to your works site. Need extra forklifts or manlifts? There’s no need to purchase these when you can rent them.
Once you have contractor insurance and your licensing in order, the next step is to get the permits and equipment you need. Then you’re ready for your Frisco construction job.
